The 1993 murder of 15-year-old Louis D. Brown inspired his mother to start the Louis D. Brown Peace Institute the following year.
Brown was hit by a stray bullet while walking in Dorchester on his way to a party for Teens Against Gang Violence. Brown’s mother, Tina Chery, founded the center to educate the community about the value of peace and to assist survivors impacted by homicide with the immediate and long-term challenges they face.
“Our goal with our survivor outreach services is to make sure that every single family that we meet with gets the same level of support, resources, information and tools and that nothing gets left out,” said Rachel Rodrigues, Director of Programs for the Institute.
Those services include helping families plan funerals and staying in touch with survivors in the coming months and years as they cope with the loss of their loved ones.
