Three men charged with murder for 2014 Mattapan double murder

Three men have been arrested in connection with a shooting that killed two people in 2014.

On April 14, Steven Stephen, 26, and Tony Evans, 25, were arraigned in Suffolk Superior Court. Both men were charged with two counts of first-degree murder and one count of unlawful possession of a firearm in relation to the murder of Clarence McGregor and Teasia Montgomery. Stephen was already in state custody on an unrelated gun charge, and police arrested Evans in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Last week, a third suspect, 29-year-old Lorenzo Jones Jr., was arrested in Augusta, Georgia. He is also charged with two counts of first-degree murder and one count of unlawful possession of a firearm.

McGregor, 25, of Dorchester, and Montgomery, 28, of Medford, were shot early on January 27, 2014 outside 92 Rosewood St. in Mattapan. Police responding to the scene found McGregor lying in the road and Montgomery on the sidewalk, about 15 yards away. Both later died from their injuries at the hospital.

Family members remembered McGregor as an animal lover who also liked working with children. Montgomery had a son and a family friend recalled her as a sweet woman who was trying to improve her life. Her ex-boyfriend had been killed in Ashmont just hours before Montgomery was shot. Police believed the shootings to be gang-related.

According to the Suffolk County District Attorney's office, all three suspects have served time in prison for gun-related convictions in 2008 or 2009.

Investigators identified Stephen, Evans and Jones as suspects through ballistics evidence at the scene, witness statements, cell tower records and other evidence gathered over the past two years, according to the DA's office. The two victims were targeted, according to prosecutors and police.

Stephen and Evans are set to return to court on May 31. Jones' arraignment date in Boston has yet to be scheduled, as an unrelated gunshot injury he sustained last year may impact his ability to travel, according to the DA's statement.

A man and woman were shot and killed early Monday morning on Rosewood Street in Mattapan, police said.

Police identified the victims on Thursday as 25-year-old Clarence McGregor, of Dorchester, and 28-year-old Teasia Montgomery, of Medford.

Authorities responded to the shooting at 2:44 a.m., according to police. McGregor was taken to Boston Medical Center and Montgomery to Brigham and Women's Hospital. They were both pronounced dead at the hospitals.

Hours before McGregor and Montgomery were shot, a 22-year-old was killed in Dorchester, the first of four homicides in less than four days in Boston.

At about 2:44am, on Monday, January 27, 2014, officers from District B-3 (Mattapan) responded to an outside scene for shots fired in the area of 92 Rosewood Street. On arrival, officers located two victims (a male and a female) both suffering from what appeared to be gunshot wounds and life threatening injuries. The male victim, believed to be his twenties, was transported to the Boston Medical Center where he was later pronounced deceased. The female victim, believed to be her twenties, was transported to the Brigham & Women’s Hospital where she was later pronounced deceased.

The Boston Police Department is actively investigating the facts and circumstances surrounding this incident. Anyone with information is asked to contact detectives assigned to the Boston Police Homicide Unit at (617) 343-4470.

Mayor says recent shootings may be tied to gang activity

Mayor Martin J. Walsh on Monday said four fatal shootings last weekend were likely gang-related, according to a statement posted to the Boston Police Department website.

Walsh said he spoke to Police Commissioner William Evans, Superintendent in Chief William Gross and a gang unit officer on Monday about the recent homicides. A 22-year-old man was killed on Callender Street in Dorchester on Friday; a man in his twenties was killed Sunday night on Dorchester Avenue in Dorchester; and two people, a man and woman both in their twenties, were killed on Rosewood Street in Mattapan early Monday morning, according to police.

"In the coming days, I will be convening several groups to discuss actions we can take in several of the areas that I discussed with Commissioner Evans and his command staff," Walsh said in the statement, which did not offer further specifics on what groups will be a part of the meetings. "We will work with all levels of government, law enforcement, and the community to reduce the trauma in our neighborhoods, get guns off the street, and address the underlying causes of violence."

The new mayor noted that by this date last year, there had been 15 shootings in the city and two gun-related deaths. As of Monday, there had been 13 shootings in Boston and eight gun-related deaths in 2014, he said.

"While there is no single solution, improving public safety is among my highest priorities," Walsh said in the statement. "This kind of violence cannot become commonplace; we should be shocked every time we hear of another shooting, of another death in our community."

January 27, 2014

For Immediate Release: Monday, January 27, 2014

We cannot become complacent to the death of any young person in our City; we need to stop these events from happening in the first place.

Today, I asked Boston Police Commissioner Bill Evans, Chief William Gross, and Gang Unit Officer Bobby Merner to brief me on recent violent events in our City. Here is what we know:

This time last year, Boston had seen 15 shootings and 2 gun fatalities. Since January 1st of this year, we have seen 13 shootings and 8 gun fatalities.
The last four shootings are likely related, and are a combination of gang violence and retaliation. It is the understanding of the Boston Police Department that there were prior relationships between the victims and the suspects.
There was also another nonfatal shooting today in Jamaica Plain, and thanks to the efforts of Boston Police and the community, a suspect is now in custody.
In the coming days, I will be convening several groups to discuss actions we can take in several of the areas that I discussed with Commissioner Evans and his Command Staff. We will work with all levels of government, law enforcement, and the community to reduce the trauma in our neighborhoods, get guns off the street, and address the underlying causes of violence.

While there is no single solution, improving public safety is among my highest priorities. This kind of violence cannot become commonplace; we should be shocked every time we hear of another shooting, of another death in our community.
