Peter Carvalho Acquitted of 2014 shooting

A jury cleared Peter Carvalho of murder in the 2014 shooting death of his one-time friend, Shannon Richardson Jr.

Richardson was shot around 1:25 p.m. on May 21, 2014, as he walked down Dudley Street in Dorchester. He died at Boston Medical Center.

Prosecutors argued that witnesses put Carvalho at the scene of the shooting:

Assistant District Attorney Tara Burdman said in court that witnesses saw Richardson walking down a pathway from Humphreys Street toward Dudley Street about 1:25 p.m., looking over his shoulder at two men following him.

One of the men, described by witnesses as having shoulder-length dreadlocks and wearing a half-buttoned blue shirt with a white T-shirt visible underneath, pointed his gun at Richardson and fired several times before fleeing with the other man in the opposite direction.

Richardson made it into a store on Dudley Street, where he collapsed.

In addition to first-degree murder, Carvalho was charged with unlawful possession of both a firearm and ammunition.

The Suffolk County district attorney released a short statement on the acquittal:

BOSTON, July 31, 2015—A Suffolk Superior Court jury today acquitted a Dorchester man accused of shooting 25-year-old Shannon Richardson on Dudley Street last year.

Jurors acquitted PETER CARVALHO (D.O.B. 8/11/88) today after a two-week trial in which prosecutors sought to prove that he shot Richardson while attempting to shoot at another man on May 21, 2014. Independent witnesses gave a description of the gunman that matched Carvalho.

Richardson – a one-time friend of Carvalho – was shot multiple times and collapsed in a nearby store. He later died of his injuries at Boston Medical Center.

Two Boston Police officers patrolling the area shortly after the gunfire saw Carvalho running while clutching his waistband, which they recognized from their training as a characteristic of an armed gunman. Officers began to pursue Carvalho, who ran straight into the store where Richardson lay dying, prosecutors said.

Carvalho was represented by attorney Kelli Porges.

Update (7/21/2014): Carvalho is currently being held without bail. He will return to court for a bail review hearing on Aug. 7, 2014.

Peter Carvalho, 25, has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the May 2014 death of Shannon Richardson Jr., also 25.

Carvalho is accused of shooting Richardson several times in the back as he walked in the Dudley Street area of Dorchester. Police later found Richardson suffering from multiple gunshot wounds in a local store. He was then taken to Boston Medical Center, where he eventually died.

Prosecutors contend Carvalho, a Dorchester native, and Richardson were once friends. In addition to the murder charge, Carvalho is accused of unlawful possession of both a firearm and ammunition.

He will return to court July 21, 2014.

First-Degree Murder Indictment in Fatal May Shooting

(BOSTON) — The Dorchester man charged with gunning down 25-year-old Shannon Richardson earlier this year is expected be arraigned in Superior Court next week, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley announced today.

The Suffolk County Grand Jury returned indictments on July 9 charging PETER CARVALHO (D.O.B. 8/11/88) with first-degree murder, unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition.

Carvalho was arrested May 21, the day Richardson’s murder, and has been held without bail since his Roxbury Municipal Court. Last week’s indictments move the case from the district court to Suffolk Superior Court, where the case will be adjudicated. Carvalho is expected to be arraigned July 21.

Peter Carvalho, 25, of Dorchester was arraigned for murder Thursday afternoon at the Roxbury Municipal Court in connection with the shooting death of 25-year-old Shannon Richardson Jr.

According to police reports, Richardson was walking in the area Humphreys Street and Dudley Street when he noticed a man fitting Carvalho's description following him. Richardson ran and Carvalho allegedly fired several rounds, striking Richardson in the back.

When police responded to a radio call for shots fired in the area of 742 Dudley Street, officers found Richardson suffering from multiple gunshot wounds in a local store. He was transported to Boston Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead.

Carvalho was stopped by Boston Police officers in the area of 742 Dudley Street near where Richardson was found.

Assistant District Attorney Tara Burdman said witnesses identified Carvalho as the alleged shooter.

Carvalho's attorney requested that Carvalho's bail be set and that he be held "without prejudice." He is currently being held without bail.

He will return to court June 23 for a probable cause hearing.

BOSTON, May 22, 2014—A one-time friend of 25-year-old Shannon Richardson was arraigned today on a murder charge stemming from his shooting death in broad daylight yesterday afternoon, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

PETER CARVALHO (D.O.B. 8/11/88) of Roxbury was arraigned today in Roxbury Municipal Court, where Judge Lisa Grant ordered him held without bail at the request of Assistant District Attorney Tara Burdman.

Richardson was shot multiple times as he walked on Dudley Street after turning from Humphreys Street. He made it into a nearby store, where he collapsed before being rushed to Boston Medical Center and dying of his injuries.

Witnesses gave a detailed description of Richardson’s assailant, which included long dreadlocks and a blue button-down shirt over a white T-shirt.

Two Boston Police officers on routine patrol in the area saw and recognized Carvalho running in the area and clutching his waistband. Moments later, they heard a radio call for shots fired, and they began pursuit of Carvalho – who ended up running into the very store where Richardson now lay dying.

Carvalho was represented by attorney Kelli Porges. He will return to court on June 26.
