Sanchez, 18, was indicted in 2014 the November 2013 murder of 29-year-old Edwin Santos, along with his father Elias Sanchez, 44, and uncle Gabriel Sanchez, 33.

Prosecutors say Elias Sanchez reportedly approached Santos and began beating him with a club outside a Dorchester Street market. Elias' son Angel, who was 16 years old at the time of the crime, and Elias' brother Gabriel Sanchez joined in and both allegedly stabbed the victim.

The bulk of Wednesday's hearing regarded an order which Judge Jeffrey Locke issued, barring the Commonwealth's expert from interviewing the defendant for a period of 30 days. Both the defense and prosecution argued various specifics surrounding language and how Angel would be handled during the testimony process.

Defense Attorney J.W. Carney Jr. was dogged in arguing against current language that stated the defendant would not be interviewed about his mental state or criminal intent, pointing out that the jury would then only receive the prosecution's version of events.

At one point, Carney implored the judge to order that he be present whenever his client was interviewed. The argument got heated between the two attorneys, especially after the Commonwealth pointed out that Angel was now 18 and a legal adult.

"You're asking a kid to perform the duties of a lawyer," Carney said.

Eventually the judge declined to issue an order but suggested that the defense file a motion with the court for later review regarding the matter.

Angel Sanchez's trial will begin in April, 2016. His father and uncle's trials will also commence that month.
Gail WaterhouseFri, 23 Oct 2015 12:43:29 -0400http://boston.homicidewatch.org/2015/10/23/trial-dates-set-for/Edwin Manuel SantosAngel R. All three men pleaded innocent at their arraignment in November.

The eldest Sanchez, who has not been present in pre-trial hearings, has asked the Commonwealth for funds to cover a pathologist, a psychologist, and an internist, court filings show.

The motions will be heard on April 24 and the Court is waiting to receive Elias Sanchez’s medical records.

During a status review conference in early February, Elias’s attorney Thomas J. Ford voiced concern about his client taking his medication, as noted in court documents. Specific medical conditions were not noted in the documents.

Gabriel Sanchez's defense has asked the Court for funds to cover an investigator, a video expert and a transcription, according to his court file. All funds have been approved.

Prosecutors believe the Sanchez trio and Santos knew each other. That November night, Elias approached Santos, who was with his girlfriend, and started beating him with a collapsible baton. He was then joined by Gabriel and Angel Sanchez who each stabbed the victim, Suffolk Assistant District Attorney Mark Zanini told the court during the men’s arraignment.

He said the men tired themselves out and stopped the attack as Santos stumbled to a nearby market where he collapsed and died from blunt force trauma and stab wounds.

The three men are being held without bail.
Melanie DostisWed, 02 Apr 2014 15:50:35 -0400http://boston.homicidewatch.org/2014/04/02/elias-sanchez-seeks-medical-expenses/Edwin Manuel SantosAngel R.
